Kenya: Kibaki's 40-Member Cabinet

13 April 2008

Nairobi — President Mwai Kibaki has named 40-member grand coalition cabinet ending a month-long bickering over the sharing of ministries between coalition partners Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Party of National Unity (PNU).

The Head of State named ODM leader Raila Odinga as Prime Minister with Musalia Mudavadi and Uhuru Kenyatta as Deputy prime Ministers while retaining Kalonzo Musyoka as Vice President and minister for Home Affairs.

Kibaki thanked mediators led by former UN secretary general Kofi Annan and friendly countries for their support and encouragement when Kenya was experiencing political crisis.

He also thanked the Prime Minister Hon Raila Odinga and all political leaders for upholding the spirit of dialogue, which enabled unlocking of the deadlock.

"I want to assure you all that l will do everything possible to ensure that our country Kenya is steered along the path of peace, unity and stability," the President said.

Kibaki promised to provide security for all Kenyans particularly those displaced by post-poll violence and challenged the new cabinet to prioritize their resettlement. Leaders, he said, must " set aside politics and get down to work and build a new Kenya."

The President said he had formed the new Ministry of Northern Kenya to focus on and address the unique challenges facing ASAL areas.

It is truly hard to be equitable when one has to leave what one values for the sake of what is right... so kenyans must accept what they got from their leader/s. they have got the closest possible cabinate to an equitable one, taking into account human weakness and other factors. Time however will also work to bring things to a greater level of balance if kenyans avoid their usual tribal corruption and strive to respect one another as members of the same nation. 40 people working hard to build the nation can do wonders, they should all… [Read Full Text]

the best strategy for Kenyans is to unit the two parties to form one unitary majority party. i think they should take this advantage and unit to from one unitary party between PNU and ODM. i bet nobody is going to beat them, and it will be historic and lasting peace for kenyans, please unit and form one party PNU + ODM = Democratic National Unity Party... you will administor kenya for the next 20 years with the blessing of Kenyan people. i feel it. work for it the result will be exceptionally beautiful.
