Southern Africa: SADC Extraordinary Summit On Zimbabwe Crises Starts

12 April 2008

Lusaka — The extraordinary summit of heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to analyse the post-electoral crisis in Zimbabwe began this afternoon in Lusaka, Zambia, Angop has learnt.

The Angolan president, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, is participating at this summit as Angola is the co-ordinator of the political, defence and security organ of the regional block.

This organ coordinates teams that supervise elections in SADC member countries, having already co-ordinated the general elections that took place in Zimbabwe, last month.

At the opening of the ceremony, the Southern African Development Community chairperson, Levy Mwanawassa, said the presence of his colleagues witness the community commitment to peace consolidation in the region.

"We will debate Zimbabwe's ongoing situation in an open, objective and honest way", added Levy Mwanawassa.

Zimbabwe's President, Robert Mugabe is absent from this summit.
