BDF VI faces punishment from the Confederation of African Volleyball Body (CAVB) after it failed to take part in the men's African Club Championships currently going on Libya.

The club could not make it to the competition because it did not have money despite the fact that it confirmed participation and paid attendance fees.

This is not the first time that the army side had failed to appear at the event. Last year, the club did not take part in the tournament because of lack of funds. The Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) officials did not know the kind of punishment to be meted out to BDF VI as they are still waiting for word from Libya. Last year, the club escaped punishment because it had not confirmed participation in the tournament unlike this time.

BDF VI team manager, Motshwari Makoko said they failed to go to the competition because they were not given money for the trip. He said they had applied for funds from the BDF headquarters but they were only informed a few days before the departure date that there is no money. Coach Selebatso Mabutho did not hide his disappointment about the development. He does not understand what went wrong since the budget for the trip had been initially approved. The BDF tactician said they were optimistic that they would take part in the tournament because everything was in place and air tickets had been bought. The disappointed Mabutho regretted that they wasted time training for the tournament. He said if they received the invitation early, they might have tried to raise funds for the trip. "If we had received the invitation in time, we could have found a way of raising funds," he said.

Mabutho is worried that the club's qualification for the tournament is useless because it denied others a chance to participate. BVF development officer Misson Mereyotlhe was disappointed about the fate of BDF VI. He said they had secured P100,000 for the trip and that it is unfortunate that the club could not be given more money to top up. He pointed out that they only learnt very late that BDF headquarters did not give the club money hence there is little they could do to help. "We could have tried something if we had known in time," he said. Mereyotlhe added that they have learnt something from the two-time failure of the club to participate in the tournament. He said next time they will do everything in their power to make sure a Botswana club takes part in the event. He said currently, they are struggling to raise money for Mafolofolo club to take part in the female edition of the same tournament in Kenya this month.
