Zambia: Levy Assures Litunga of Prompt Roads Rehab

Mongu — PRESIDENT Mwanawasa has assured the Litunga of the Lozi people that all the road rehabilitation and construction projects in Western Province will be completed on time.

The President said the Government had allocated K1.7 billion for the completion of the Shangombo Hospital.

In a speech read for him at the Kuomboka ceremony yesterday by Defence Minister, George Mpombo, President Mwanawasa said the Government attached great importance to improving the road network in Western Province and other parts of the country.

"My Government is concerned about the poor state of the roads but it is committed to changing the scenario of the Mongu-Kalabo, Mongu-Senanga, Senanga-Sesheke, Kalabo-Senanga, Kaoma-Kasempa, Mongu-Kaoma and other roads," he said.

The President said that this year the Government allocated K82.6 billion for the road rehabilitation in the Western Province.

Dr Mwanawasa also said that the Government had through the ministry of Local Government and Housing allocated some money for the construction of houses and high schools in various parts of the province.

He said that K500 million would be used for the housing project in Mongu district.

He said K150 million had been set aside for the same project in Senanga, K650 million was expected to be spent on the housing project in Sesheke, K500 million was allocated to Lukulu district while K150 million would be used for a similar project in Shangombo district.

The Government had set aside money for the construction of high schools in Kaoma, Lukulu, Nkanya in Mongu and Nangwenya in Shangombo.

On the incomplete Shangombo hospital project, the President said: "It is sad the project is not complete. I want to assure you Your Royal Highness that Government will not tolerate shoddy work, incompetence and corruption."

He said the Government was currently implementing 59 projects in the province at a cost of K26 billion.

He said that the Government attached great importance to the role of chiefs in the development of the country, as traditional rulers worked with the people at the grassroots.
