Mauritius: what you should know ?- â-è Salary compensation - what do trade unionists say?

14 April 2008

Port Louis — The trade unionists want the amount of salary compensation to be based only on the rate as inflation. Negotiations with the minister of Labour and industrial relations, Vasant Bunwaree, started last week and will continue until there is a consensus concerning the criteria to be used to calculate salary compensation.

â-è Why are trade unions insisting that inflation rate be the only criterion?

According to trade unions, the purchasing power of Mauritians is decreasing day by day due to mounting inflation in the country. Thus, taking into consideration the inflation rate, salary compensation should be adjusted to match the loss in purchasing power.

â-è What is the point of view of the minister?

According to the minister, increasing the salary compensation cannot depend on inflation rate only. Other issues such as national productivity and unemployment rate should be taken into consideration. For the time being, he has referred the matter to the cabinet for a decision.

â-è What are the other issues raised by the minister?

Minister Bunwaree also dealt with issues brought up by the trade unionists. For example, the appointment of the president of the National Pay Council (NPC) in consultation with trade unionists, the right to go on strike if no consensus has been found with the NPC and the obligation of the government to accept the recommendations if a consensus has been reached.
