South Africa: Improved Health Care Decreases Maternal Mortality

Johannesburg — Interventions to improve the quality of health care for pregnant mothers have led to the ratio in maternal mortality dropping over the past ten years.

Speaking at the opening of the African Union Continental Workshop in Turffontein on Sunday, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang said the maternal mortality ratio has decreased from 150 per 100 000 live births in 1998 to 124 per 100 000 to date.
