Mozambique's Minister of Youth and Sport, David Simango, has restated that the country's new national stadium will be ready on time, by mid-2010.

Work on the stadium has not yet begun, but Simango could foresee no problems ahead. "The period of 27 months (for the construction) was calculated to give us a margin, and we believe the main work can be completed before that time", he said.

Simango was speaking on Friday, after a visit to the outer Maputo neighbourhood of Zimpeto, where the stadium will be built. Here he inspected the preparatory work - the extension of the electricity grid, the building of access roads, and the provision of water supply.

The stadium, budgeted at 57 million US dollars, will be able to hold 42,000 spectators. It will have a car park for 2,500 vehicles, and a variety of shops that will stimulate employment in the area.

To supply the site with electricity, the country's publicly owned power company, EDM, is building an 11 kilometre transmission line from the suburb of Magoanine. 77 pylons have now been installed, and another 35 are still to be erected. This work should be completed within the next 45 days.

Simango also visited the site in the neighbouring area of Intaka where four wells have been drilled to supply the stadium with water. The company Profuro Internacional says that the wells can provide 20 cubic metres of water per hour, and this amount can be increased if necessary.
