Namibia: FNB Spirit of Giving Recipients Announced

Windhoek — Three charities benefited from this year's First National Bank Spirit of Giving Campaign.

This is the second time that FNB has donated money to charities nominated by their customers.

Last year the Bushman Farmers' Development Initiative from Tsumkwe, the Theresia Orphans and Vulnerable Children's Home at Rundu and the Genadegawe project at Aranos received money.

This year the recipients were the Annelie Olivier Home for Senior Citizens at Rehoboth, the Aviat Pre-primary School at Keetmanshoop and the Western Papyrus Project at Khorixas.

The Annelie Olivier Home looks after about 30 elderly people who have no family.

Since most of them are former farmworkers, it was decided to start an organic vegetable garden with the money.

The garden will not only provide the home with daily fresh vegetables but the excess can be sold for an extra income.

The garden will also keep the senior citizens busy and leave them with a sense of being needed.

The Western Papyrus Project is run by Augustine Gaochas, a retired teacher who moved to Khorixas and saw that many people from the surrounding area were illiterate.

She decided to use her teaching skills to teach people to read and to write.

She teaches them at her uncle's house and says that more and more people are coming to "school" as the word spreads.

The FNB Spirit of Giving Campaign helps projects countrywide that have good potential for growth and development.

The bank monitors the progress of the projects on an annual basis.

The three charities received a total amount of N$100 000.
