The number of suspected cholera cases in the North has risen to 1 120, and eight people have died of the waterborne disease, Oshana Health Director Naftali Hamata said yesterday.

Dr Hamata, who is also the Flood Emergency Co-ordinator for Health in the North, told The Namibian yesterday that the confirmed cases still stood at 16. The vast majority of cases - 1 118 - and seven of the deaths were reported in the Ohangwena Region, especially in the Engela health district, which covers the Engela, Okatope and Eenhana areas.

Dr Hamata said one child had died of cholera in the Kunene Region last week and another case of the disease was also reported in that region. The number of malaria cases in the Omusati, Oshana and Ohangwena regions had increased to 2 623, Dr Hamata said. The worst-hit region is Omusati, with 2 166 malaria cases and seven deaths, followed by Oshana with 238 cases and two deaths and Ohangwena with 219 cases and three deaths.

Dr Hamata said malaria will be a big problem now that the floodwaters are receding and mosquitoes are breeding in stagnant pools. He urged people to heed the warnings and advice given by health workers.
