President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has welcomed the British Government's decision to provide 2 million pounds (4 million United States dollars) to assist Liberia's health sector.

The Liberian leader made the commendation today at the Foreign Ministry, when she met a Representative of the British Department for International Development (DFID), Mr. Desmond Curran. Mr. Curran was accompanied by Health and Social Welfare Minister Dr. Walter Gwenigale.

The President recounted the fruitful talks she had with Prime Minister Gordon Brown during her recent visit to Great Britain, adding that he affirmed his government's support towards the country's national recovery.

She observed that if Liberia's goal of becoming a post-conflict success story is to be realised, such partnerships like the British-Liberia relations would be crucial.

Mr. Curran expressed his government pleasure in joining Liberia's path towards national recovery. He confirmed DFID's contribution of 4 million pounds (6 million United States dollars) over the next two years to the pooled fund for the implementation of the government of Liberia's national health plan.

Pres. Sirleaf Pays Tribute to Lott Carey Baptist Mission School During Centenary Celebrations

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has paid tribute to Lott Carey Baptist Mission School for its enormous contributions towards improving the intellectual standards of the country.

The President spoke today at the Lott Carrey Baptist Mission School in Brewerville, where she served as keynote speaker at a program marking the school's centenary celebrations.

She traced the difficult past of the country's educational sector and expressed her government's resolve to change the current educational standards.

She further added that the quality of education in Liberia should be more than teaching students to only pass exams. The Liberian leader recounted the cheating which characterized last year's West African Examinations Council results and called on students not to repeat such ugly acts.

President Johnson Sireaf added that education is the foundation for socio-economic development and praised Lott Carey Mission for its contribution towards nation-building. She finally paid tribute to Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Walker, outgoing Superintendent of the school, for his many years of service.

In another development, President Johnson Sirleaf today toured the Capitol Building, seat of the national legislature. She said her tour was geared towards reaching out to the first branch of government in an aim of fostering cooperation to achieve government's development agenda.
