Monrovia — The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Liberia (TRC) has suspended Commissioner Pearl Brown-Bull for conflict of interest.
In a letter to Commissioner Brown-Bull dated April 10, 2008 copy of which was sent to President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, TRC Chairman Jerome Verdier said as of April 11, 2008 the commissioner will disengage absolutely from all work, activities, representations and functions of the TRC until a subsequent decision is taken by the commission.
The letter said despite the TRC's overindulgence of Mrs. Brown-Bull's breach of mandatory provisions of the TRC Act requiring full time commitment of commissioners, she has failed to comply with disclosure requirements which would have positioned the commission to deny or accept her request for exemption to continue in a second employment.
Commissioner Brown-Bull presently serves on both the TRC and Public Procurement and Concession Commission (PPCC).
"As it is, you are holder of two appointments in government without exemption, in clear violations of the TRC Act and TRC Rules and Procedures. In face of this, you have opted not to remedy the situation by either resigning or making the necessary disclosures required by you," the letter said.
On February 5, the communication said, the TRC first notified and reminded Mrs. Bull of the provisions of the TRC Act and her obligation thereof but she did little to comply and be in good standing with the commission, adding that on March 14 she was again reminded and given a final one week ultimatum to comply.
The communication reminded Mrs. Brown-Bull that her conduct is unacceptable to the commission and exposes it to public ridicule and disrepute.
"It is not pleasing at all to note that such conduct is unacceptable to the commission. It puts you in unfavorable standing with the commission and exposes it to public ridicule and disrepute. As of tomorrow, April 11, 2008, you will disengage absolutely from all work, activities, representations and functions of the TRC in consequence thereof, until the situation is remedied or until a subsequent decision is taken by the commission," the letter said.
The commission ordered Mrs. Brown-Bull to turn over all TRC properties in her possession to the Executive Secretary.
