Angolan Foreign minister, João Bernardo de Miranda, left Luanda on Monday for New York, where he will represent the head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, at the joint United Nations Security Council and African Union Peace and Security Council meeting scheduled for April 17- 18.

Speaking to ANGOP at Luanda's "4 de Fevereiro" International Airport, João Miranda said that Angola is a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council while South Africa, as chair of the UN Security Council for this month, summoned the joint meeting to discuss the conflicts in Africa.

The head of Angola's diplomacy also explained that at this type of meetings do not make biding decisions, with the council, through its president, issuing a final declaration.

The Security Council (UNSC) is the organ of the United Nations tasked with the maintenance of international peace and security. Its powers, outlined in the United Nations Charter, include the establishment of peacekeeping operations, the establishment of international sanctions, and authorisation for military action. Its powers are exercised through UN Security Council's resolutions.

It is made up of 15 members, five of which permanent: the United States of America, United Kingdom, Russia and China, with the right to veto.

The African Union Peace and Security Council has as its purpose to promote security, stability in the continent, guarantee the wellbeing of the populations, implement peacekeeping and after conflict reconstruction, including missions.

Member countries of the Council are: Angola, Algeria, Botswana, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Ethiopia, Egypt, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Gabon, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Uganda.
