Cape Town — Angola's National Assembly (Parliament) speaker, Roberto de Almeida, visited on Sunday the Robben Island, in South Africa, where the former prison in which Nelson Mandela was jailed for 18 years is located.
The visit was part of the 118th Interparliamentary Union programme of activities. The meeting's opening ceremony took place Sunday night at Cape Town international convention centre, in South Africa.
In the island - now turned into a museum - Roberto de Almeida walked around some prison wards where prominent South African politicians, such as Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and others were jailed for many years.
Robben Island, located 11 kilometres of Cape Town, was registered in 1999 by UNESCO on the list of places considered as human patrimony.
