The other day I took a leisurely walk along Serengeti road, off Old Moshi road. It was a Sunday afternoon and my wobbly legs were yearning for a short stretch exercise. I could have done the walk somewhere else, but I specifically chose Serengeti road for some nostalgic reasons.

Some many years ago, when I first came to Arusha, I lived along that street. So as far as Arusha is concerned that was my first home street. It is a quiet and leafy street in a middle class suburb.

My house had a great big garden. This was a very welcome aspect as I am avid garden lover. This was in great contrast to my neighbour who, I must admit, had a bigger garden space. However, it was unkempt and quite literally an eye sore.

So as I passed by this house, which naturally had changed hands, I was pleasantly shocked to find it had been creatively transformed into a beautiful lodge with an enviable well kept garden

I walked in and was welcome by Mrs Stella Mwaikuka, the Pamoja Expeditions Lodge Managing Director and Mr. Boniface Kisingu, the Manager. They took me around and I was impressed how the place had been turned into a homely lodge with lush gardens and a small swimming pool for her patrons. The lodge has 21 rooms, all en-suite, two restaurants -one on the roof top - a bar and a spacious car park. Its bed and breakfast rates are quite affordable starting from US$ 40 (non - resident) or Tshs 50,000/- (residents).

I looked across the fence to check on my former residence. What I saw made me want to cry. My beautiful garden was nowhere to be seen. Some dry perched shrubs and termite hills were all I could see.
