Luanda — The Speaker of the National Assembly, Roberto de Almeida, Monday in Cape Town, South Africa affirmed that the Angolan authorities must be proud of victories achieved in 32 years of independence, among which the six years of peace, in a sense of reversing the problems that have been affecting the population.
The speaker of the Angolan Parliament was speaking at the plenary session of the 118th conference of Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU), during a general debate on the world's social, economic and political situation, under the motto "Rolling back poverty frontiers".
According to Roberto de Almeida, in these years, the authorities have been developing determined and sustained efforts in order to change the problems that affect the Angolan people, through drafting adequate policies and strategies.
The Angolan parliamentarian added that this effort is also based on practices directed to the future and to the fulfilment of millennium goals, followed by indicators of results that have already been defined in the Poverty Reduction and Strategy Document.
"We are sure that such efforts will be crowned with success", said the Angolan Parliament speaker, who stressed that the future of the countries and the destinies of the people demand from everyone a new approach aiming at seizing the opportunities of cooperation and potentials in favour of social equality and development.
To Roberto de Almeida, the political action and its discussion should be pragmatic, thus contributing to the promotion of wellbeing and living quality of the people, mainly those in need.
"We must turn our attention to progressive removal of economic, social, cultural and political barriers that hinder the real equality among citizens in order to contribute to effort of tools of political, economical and social development in the world", he appealed.
"Rolling back the frontiers of poverty" is the general theme of 118th conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The conference was opened on Sunday evening and is due to close on April 18th.
