The Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration on Friday announced the new visa and permit fees for Namibia. The new fees come into effect today.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration, Samuel //Goagoseb, said the adjustment will help the ministry generate revenue that will be used for latest technology and improve efficiency.

He added that for years, work at the ministry was carried out manually, which caused unnecessary delays and frustration among applicants.

Once efficiency is improved, customers will also have to get proper services for their money, he said.

Lack of modern technology within the ministry has also created loopholes especially in the alien control department.

"We will ensure that the system has integrity and that all malpractices are eliminated," he added.

Last year, the ministry generated N$70 million and has a deficit of N$20 million given its operational budget of N$90 million, the Permanent Secretary said.

"The existing fee structure has been in place since the Act was passed and no review was instituted during the last 15 years," he added.

The entry, work and business visas will now cost N$390 for a three-month period or less, and N$780 for four to six months.

A multiple entry visa will be acquired at N$390 for a period of three months or less, while N$780 will be paid for four to six months and N$1560 for seven to 12 months, N$3120 for 24 months and N$4680 for 36 months.

Employment permits for both first applications and renewals will cost N$1395 for seven months to 12 months; N$2790 for 24 months and N$4185 for 36 months.

A study permit for primary and secondary education will go for N$1050 for a period of seven to 12 months, N$2100 for 24 months and N$3250 for 36 months.

Students at higher institutions will cough up N$1395 for seven to 12 months, N$2790 for 24 months and N$4185 for 36 months.
