Gaborone

Mochudi Centre Chiefs were crowned this season's champions of the Mascom Premier League after beating Mogoditshane Fighters 4-2 at the National Stadium on Wednesday night.

After losing the title to ECCO City Greens last season, Magosi have shown that this time round, they were not prepared for any slip-ups. They have not put a foot wrong and remain the only unbeaten side in the league.

After waiting for 36 years to win their first league title, Chiefs are now out to make history by finishing the competition unbeaten. Magosi are left with four games against Police XI, Notwane, BDF XI and TAFIC.

Chiefs have proved that good preparations and a focused management with money brings success. The club managers have brought in good players like Given Mpundu, James Kachinga, Mpho Mabogo and Tshepo Motlhabankwe to beef up an already powerful squad. Some critics pointed out that this will be counter-productive because a team full of stars rarely delivers. They based their argument on the fact that Chiefs have had a star-studded team in the past but failed to deliver. But the accusations never distracted the management and they worked hard and kept the players happy and beefed up the squad.

This brought depth to the side. Perhaps this has been the crucial difference between Magosi and the rest of the clubs in the Premier League. The team delivered even when some key players were not available due to suspensions and injuries. With the quality of players at the club and the fighting spirit they showed all season long, Chiefs should represent the country well in the African Champions League next year. In hailing the club's achievement, the fans cannot be forgotten. They acted as the 13th man during games with their songs, dance and colourful presence.

They attended games in large numbers - perhaps the largest this season - and motivated their heroes to deliver the results. We join the rest of the football fraternity and well-wishers in saluting Magosi and the fans for winning the league title.
