Gaborone — The shake up in the civil service continued last week with the Director of Broadcasting Services, Bapasi Mphusu, transferred to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) as director of management services starting from today.
Mphusu has been with the government media for a long time, which saw him become the director of the Department of Broadcasting Services in April 2006. He took over from Habuji Sosome, who was appointed the project coordinator for the countrywide transmitter network, which entails the expansion of the national radio and television terrestrial network under the National Development Plan 9.
Government spokesperson, Jeff Ramsay, confirmed to Monitor yesterday that Mphusu has been transferred. "Yes, I heard that Mr. Mphusu has been transferred to IEC on the same position he was at Broadcasting Services." Contacted for comment yesterday about his appointment, Mphusu said that it is true that, "I have been transferred to IEC on the same position but different portfolio as I will the director of management." However Mphusu said he followed the journalism part because "I had passion as I have always wanted to do it. Though I have done other causes which are not media related, this has been my passion."
Mphusu is happy that he will be working normal hours as other civil servants who are not in the media fraternity. He said at Broadcasting Services he was compelled to work extended hours "because of the nature of the work."
At Broadcasting Services, Mphusu was tasked with the responsibilities of looking after Botswana Television and Radio Botswana (RB1&2). At the time of going to print his replacement was not yet known.
