The Botswana Ladies Golf Union (BLGU) in conjunction with Royal and Ancient Golf Club (RNA) from Scotland held a training course in Gaborone last week to drill local players on how to develop young golfers.

The week-long course, known as Train the Trainers, was held at Phakalane Golf Estate. It ended on Friday. The training was supported by the Botswana Golf Union (BGU). Two top golfers from neighbouring Zimbabwe, Alex Bell and Stewart Stovold, conducted the course. Twelve golfers from Jwaneng, Selebi-Phikwe and Gaborone attended the training. Bell told Monitor Sport that the RNA has a programme to help countries develop young golfers and promote the game worldwide. "This course is targeting amateur golfers who already have knowledge about the game. It is mainly for people who play golf at club level and from here they will impart the skills to aspiring golfers," said Bell. She added that the training programme will result in the development of golf at the grassroots in Botswana.

BLGU president Nina Cleote said they already have a programme to coach SOS children and those who attended last week's training will help the youngsters. She said they want to start teaching juniors from the age of 10 to boost the development of golf. She said it is good to always keep training coaches so that they take the knowledge back to communities and schools.

One of the trainees, Gabriel Tjitjo from Selebi-Phikwe Golf Club said they have learnt a lot from the course. "We learnt a number of things like how to approach different situations when playing a game and deal with different situations," he told Monitor Sport. They learnt how to handle pressure and different shots. He promised that they will impart the knowledge to young golfers at their respective clubs.

He asserted that as much as he has learnt a lot about training young golfers, he got a few tactics to develop his game. He urged the local golf unions to organise more courses to improve the game.
