Liberia: 'Buchanan Highway Was a Traveling Hazard'

Monrovia — The Monrovia-Buchanan highway which was once deplorable is now being patched by the Buchanan Renewable Energies (BRE).

Prior to the patching of potholes, vehicles took three hours to reach Buchanan amidst persistent rocking due to the deplorable road condition.

At a news conference Saturday in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, the Executive Vice President of BRE, Martin C. J. Greenwood said their decision to patch the potholes on the highway followed the signing and ratification of BRE's concession agreement.

"We recognized that the Buchanan highway was a traveling hazard; all major roads in and around Buchanan, roads around the port and roads to the Buchanan Cemetery have been repaired and are being maintained," Mr. Greenwood said in a statement read by Mr. Roosevelt Gould, BRE Vice President for Government Relations.

Mr. Greenwood explained that BRE mobilized equipment and manpower to begin the task of patching up potholes and maintaining the highway, adding "we have not built an all weather road, but we have improved the condition of the Buchanan highway and minimize the wear and tear on motorists."

Touching on other development by BRE, Greenwood indicated that 560 Liberians from Grand Bassa County have been employed and promised that employment will be increased by 260 by June this year.

He disclosed that BRE total investment to date is in excess of US$32 million and a further investment of US$130 million over the next three years.

Mr. Greenwood pointed that the power station BRE is planning to install in Liberia will provide a further 3000 jobs within the project.
