An aspirant for the Selebi-Phikwe East parliamentary seat, Sarajevo Malepeng has called for unity in the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). He told the BDP members to close ranks after the forthcoming primary elections. "We must maintain a constant and unwavering support for the party."

He noted that the ruling party has laid a very strong foundation of national unity and true democracy of consultation and compromise. He indicated that the country's pattern of economic development is envied by others. He hailed the BDP for taking care of the youth and women. "Water supply plans are ongoing and P7 billion has been injected to Morupule Colliery to sustain electricity supply in the country and more developments are mushrooming."

Lands Minister and MP for Selebi-Phikwe East, Nonofo Molefhi said before the new President Ian Khama was sworn in, Batswana were deceived into believing that he will run a military government.

He said as the BDP policy says 'Letsema le tsweletse', Batswana should know that they are all servants of the country hence the need for every individual to take responsibility, to work and to protect the nation. Molefhi said on the other hand, the opposition believes that the government must do everything. The minister stressed the need to nurture the country's democracy and said BDP MPs recently rejected the motion calling for direct election of the president and said it is the same system that has put neighbouring Zimbabwe in disarray. He noted that Zimbabwe has a shaky way of governance because it has no proper hierarchy at the presidency. "In Botswana, we have clear succession patterns with which we prevent incidences like that of Zimbabwe."He advised Batswana to learn to be self-reliant so that they can withstand competition for international trade once the SADC free-trade protocol takes effect.
