Angola: General Commander for Major Police Vitality

The general commander of the National Police, Ambrósio de Lemos, Tuesday in Luanda spoke out of the need for a police with a major vitality, in order to more and more guarantee the defence of the citizens rights and maintain public order, security and tranquillity.

"We need a police that have vitality and their members to understand and take the principle that the corporation is an instrument of the State, directed to the defence of the rights and security of the citizens, towards the maintenance of public order, security and tranquillity," said the general commander at the opening of the National Police Broad Consultative Council.

According to him, the police cannot frustrate the trust given by the State's institutions and the people, and should invest in the construction of new physical structures and in the capacity of the staff.

Ambrósio de Lemos stated as well that the efforts made by the National Police have to certain extent permitted to guarantee the citizens' tranquillity, through the dismantling of a good number of gangs of criminals and arrest of offenders.

He also spoke of the intensification of car and foot patrols and of punctual operations of fight against delinquency.

The officer recalled that efforts are underway for the creation of conditions to secure orderly legislative elections set for September this year.

"The police shall have the mission and hard task to guarantee that the elections go in an environment of security," said the general commander.

As to the 2007, commissioner Ambrósio de Lemos said some changes in the country's criminal situation were noted, particularly concerning physical offences, thefts and use of firearms in the commission of several crimes.

Thus, the commander assured, there is need for the citizens to be sensitised to surrender any firearms they might illegally possess.

He also encouraged the staff to perform their duties with zeal, dedication and professionalism, regardless of the constraints of material, financial and social nature.

The meeting that will close on Thursday is analysing the work done by the National Police in 2007, the organisation of the process towards the 2008 legislative elections and the 27th African Cup of Nations (CAN) in Angola in 2010.
