16 April 2008

Windhoek — THE Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) Mountain Bike Cross-Country season kicks off in Windhoek on Saturday.

According to a media statement by the Rock & Rut Mountain Bike Club, the first race of the series starts at the MTC tower in Hendrik Witbooi Street between the University of Namibia (Unam) and Pionierspark Extension One.

The starting time is 14h00, but registration and entries will take place at 13h00.

Interested persons are urged to arrive early to collect their numbers and to apply as members.

The race will take place on a route which is 7,2 kilometres long and marked out in the bush.

Riders need to cycle a certain number of laps, depending on their category and age.

"This is a good spectator event, which enables viewers to see the riders from various points.

The MTC Fun Ride, which was held at the beginning of the month, saw a lot of new faces and now we encourage them to join in another MTC-sponsored event.

There will be a category for sports groups as well," the statement read.

Namibian mountain bikers have excelled in South Africa over the past month.

Mannie Heymans and Heletje van Staden won the SA cross-country championships, while Marc Bassingthwaigthe is the leader in the cross-country series.

Heymans also achieved a 10th overall position in a very tough and competitive Cape Epic.
