The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has allocated N$8 million to start a major aquaculture project at Leonardville village in the Omaheke Region.
Leonardville is situated about 170 km south of Gobabis. Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Dr Abraham Iyambo revealed this during a fish consumption promotion and harvesting campaign at Okombepera village in the Aminuis Constituency on Saturday. Iyambo said his ministry and the Omaheke Regional Council have conducted a feasibility study for the project, and the findings in the report indicate that the region has plenty of quality water for the project. One identified area is Leonardville, as he indicated that the water in that area is of high quality for fish farming.
Iyambo said after President Hifikepunye Pohamba approved this year's budget, his ministry decided to spend N$1 million to design the project. He added that they would spend another N$3 million the following year for infrastructure and another N$4 million on human resources and capacity building.
Iyambo said mostly young people will be employed by the project, adding that they will also employ fish managers. Training will be provided to all the people employed by the project. After the project becomes a reality, Iyambo said, he expects the project to produce more fish for consumption and marketing. Similar projects are expected to be started in the Omusati and Hardap regions. In a speech read on his behalf at the same occasion, Regional Councillor for the Aminuis Constituency Erwin Uanguta commended the minister for bringing such development to his constituency, and gave the assurance that his people would support the initiative.
Aminuis Settlement's Chief Control Officer, Gustav Kauta, read the speech on behalf of Uanguta.

"The people of the cattle country are, slowly but surely, getting your message of diversification of farming methods and I can assure you that given enough fresh water resources in the constituency and the support of your ministry in terms of training and material support, this sector will grow and take its rightful place in the household economies of our communities," he noted.
