Ethiopia: Media Urged to Mind Language in Reporting On PLWHA

Improper language used by some media outlets in reporting on and about people living with HIV/AIDS is harming the psychology of the people who have AIDS, an activist said on Monday, calling on the media to be more sensitive.

The activist-a Resident Advisor at Internews Network- made the statement while speaking at a media workshop intended to train and urge local reporters on how to write a report about HIV/AIDS with out offending the persons living with HIV/AIDS "Even though the media has so far played vast role in educating the public, it has also at times hurt the psychology of PLWHA" Sonya De Masi said conducting the workshop which began at the Dembel City Centre on Monday.

Intranews aims to strengthen the ability of the Ethiopian media to report accurately and in a non-stigmatizing way about the AIDS epidemic in Ethiopia through working closely with journalists, NGOs and government agencies.

"The skills required will be useful in all other fields of reporting, as a large part of the training will focus on nurturing Journalism skills," Sonya De Masi The workshop organized by Intranews in association The Local Voices Project, is being led by Rachel Jones, a skilled America print journalist and experienced international trainer.

She has conducted similar workshops in Ethiopia in the past on be half of Internews.
