Liberia: U.S$10 Million Supplementary Budget Submitted

Monrovia — President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has submitted a US$10 million supplementary budget for fiscal year 2007/08 to the Liberian Senate.

A covering letter which was read by the Senate's Deputy Secretary, Mrs. Genevieve Massaquoi in session Tuesday indicates that the supplementary budget includes a targeted donor component of US$5,646,340 million and non-donor component of US$4,353,660 million.

According to the letter, President Johnson-Sirleaf noted that the amount of US$4 million would be provided by the World Bank, while US$1,646,340 million will be made available by the Government of France.

She said US$1,999,138 of the non-donor component will come from revenue surplus of fiscal year 2007/08.

The letter indicated further that US$994,522 will come from Mittal Steel Community Development Fund and US$400,000 from GSM Companies, while US$360,000 will also come from Robert L. Johnson Group of Companies.

According to the budget, the amount of US$1,420,805 has been allocated for Education and US$1,435,000 for Health, and the University of Liberia is allotted US$100,000, while the Monrovia Transit Authority is earmarked US$100,000.

US$55, 000 has also been earmarked to facilitate a pending Mano River Union summit of heads of state and government in Monrovia.

According to the supplementary budget, US$150,000 will go towards the operation of Phebe Hospital and additional US$123,000 has been allotted to finance a critical budgetary shortfall for the Forestry Development Authority.

It can be recalled that the amount of US$199,383,953 was approved for fiscal year 2007/08 by members of the National Legislature and signed into law by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in August last year.
