Mozambique: Illegal Foreigners Arrested in Pemba

16 April 2008

Maputo — At least 23 foreigners, 15 from Ethiopia and eight from Bangladesh, were stopped shortly after their arrival at the airport of Pemba, capital of the northern Mozambican Cabo Delgado province on Saturday, for failing to meet the requirements for the entry of a foreigner in the country.

Such requirements include reference of the place of accommodation, identity of the person who will receive them here in Mozambique, and financial resources to live by during his/her stay.

Cabo Delgado chief of provincial Migration Services Julio Daniel is cited in Wednesday's issue of the daily 'Noticias' as saying that the 23 foreigners will be deported this Wednesday to the countries where they had taken their flight to Mozambique.

Most of them took their flight in Da-es-Salaam, while others came from Nairobi.

Some of the foreigners did produce entry visas, allegedly issued by Mozambican Embassies in Ethiopia and Bangladesh. 'Some do have entry visas, but these visas are not supported by other requirements, such as a term of responsibility. They say that they are coming as tourists, but they do not say where, and they also do not say who is to receive them, and they do not have money for their expenses. We already know all these tricks', said Daniel.

He added that Pemba has been an entry point of many illegal foreigners, and the Mozambican authorities have been deporting many of them.
