The publicly owned Mozambican railway company (CFM) intends to complete, by late May, the payment of pensions to all its 524 former workers, who were retrenched between 1998 and 1999, reports Wednesday's issue of the daily 'Noticias'.
Of this group, 13 had been serving in the headquarters, in Maputo, 191 in the Southern branch of the company, 218 in the central region's branch, 23 in the CFM-Zambezia, and another 79 were serving in the northern branch of the company, CFM-Norte.
The reason why they have not yet received their money is because the company has been failing to locate them.
CFM Human Resources director Inacio Rodrigues Junior urges them all to come to the company and collect their money before the expiry, in June, of the contract with the World Bank, the institution that provides the funds for the payment of pensions to retrenched workers.
Junior said that these former workers have been called repeatedly, but they have been failing to show up.
In the process of rationalising workforce in the company, those who would complete 35 year service between October 1998 and December 1999, regardless of whether or not they would reach the retiring age of 60 for men, and 55 for women, were invited to retire.
'This group was retrenched at the time when we were negotiating with the World Bank for funding of the process. Only in 2001, this institution did agree to grant the money, but only confirmed in 2006. There were many negotiations along this process, because the bank would argue that this group was retrenched before the launching of the retrenchment process', said Junior.

He further explained that the process of payment to this last group has nothing to do with those who do not agree with the way their compensations were calculated, and submitted the matter to the parliament, the Assembly of the Republic. This organ promised to give a response until late May.
