The recently purchased Botswana Police Service (BPS) anti-riot vehicles would not be used should any riots erupt in the country.

This is because the vehicles have not been registered at the Department of Road Transport and Safety. BPS spokesman Christopher Mbulawa confirmed yesterday that the registration of the vehicles is ongoing.

He explained that that was the reason why the vehicles could not be used at the graduation ceremony of police officers who were trained in peacekeeping at the Otse Police College last week.

He said there are qualified officers trained in operating and maintaining the trucks. In place of the trucks, three anti-riot vehicles were brought in from South Africa to add to the three V8 anti-riot vans belonging to BPS to facilitate the mock anti-riot operation. At least 67 trainees from South Africa, Lesotho and Botswana graduated after completing a course coordinated by the French embassies in Botswana and South Africa.
