Mogomotsi Moloi

Police XI team manager, James Duha has confirmed that they have secured the services of former ECCO City Greens' coach Barry Daka.

"Yes, we have hired him. He is supposed to start work this week," Duha said yesterday. He added that they are yet to decide on the contract but said two years will be preferable. Daka dropped a bombshell last week when he resigned from the former Mascom Premier League champions.

In his resignation letter, the Zimbabwean coach stated that he has found a better offer somewhere. He watched his new charges walloping Boteti Young Fighters 3-0 at UB Stadium over the weekend.

Duha said that since Sthando Mogwadi left for further studies in South Africa last year, the club has not hired a head coach. The team has been under the guidance of Billy Mabophiwa who remains Daka's assistant. Duha said they never placed adverts to hire a coach but a number of candidates approached them and one of them is Daka. "We were approached by a number of coaches but we settled for him," asserted Duha. He said this is because the Zimbabwean is a good coach. Without mentioning names, Duha said that they did not want to bring back the coaches who drilled the team previously. He hailed Daka as a very successful coach as per his record at Notwane and ECCO City. He strongly believes that the Zimbabwean will instill discipline in the players. He said Daka has won a number of titles at his former clubs and perhaps he will do the same with the Jungle Kings. Daka's arrival at Otse comes as good news to the struggling former champions.

Duha conceded that Police XI did not perform well this season and they want the new coach to turn their fortunes around. "Mochudi Centre Chiefs have already taken the league title and we want just to finish in the top eight," he said. He indicated that they are planning for the future and that is why they have brought in Daka.

He was hopeful that the new coach will build a competitive side for the Coca-Cola Cup campaign and the coming season. The coach, whose contract at ECCO was supposed to expire in September, was not available at for comment.

Meanwhile, ECCO chairman Mothibedi Lathang did not hide his disappointment about Daka's premature departure. However, he said with or without the coach, life goes on. He said they had a contract with the coach but both parties have solved the issue amicably, as the contract dictated. "We had an agreement that anyone terminating the contract has to give the other party one month notice, failing which you pay one month salary. So Daka has complied with the contract and we are happy about that though his departure is a blow to us," said Lathang.
