Francistown — Three students of the Francistown campus of the Academy of Business Management University College (ABM) were presented with awards in recognition of their academic performance last Friday.
The honorees Mositi Mogotsi and Lerato Sylvia Moalosi were beside themselves with joy as they received their awards at a glittering prize giving ceremony organised by ABM University College. The third, Tshepiso Mosimanewathebe, could not attend the ceremony, but the elation of his mother more than compensated for his absence. The Member of Parliament for Francistown South Khumongwana Maoto presented the awards.
Mosimanewathebe won himself a one-year scholarship to pursue a diploma course with ABM Francistown. His mother accepted the award on his behalf. Mositi Mogotsi attracted the Top Paper Prize for Personnel Administration, which carries a cash award of 100 pounds (approximately P1,500) and a certificate. Mogotsi passed her course with a distinction.
Similarly, she was awarded the Top Paper Prize for Managing People for which she also took home 100 pound sterling and a certificate. Like her fellow student, Moalosi had distinguished herself with a distinction.
In interviews afterwards, Moalosi said she was pleasantly surprised that she had emerged the best student in human resource management when she had been failing the course all along. "This is just the beginning," she said.
Mogotsi had this to say: "I am very proud of my achievements. I managed to excel in this course because of hard work. I think it is only fair for one to study hard if one is sponsored by government."
Maoto had earlier told the gathering that government was spending P28,000 on each student per annum. "There are people out there, graduates who are struggling to get jobs.
So I urge all ABM students to put more effort in their studies. When you graduate, don't expect government to provide employment for you; you should instead create employment for yourselves and employ others."
The college's academic administrator, Busisiwe Ndlovu, said the three were among a multitude of international students decorated by the international examining body, the UK-based Association of Business Executives (ABE), for outstanding performance in their respective areas of study.
ABM is an affiliate of ABE. "(While we are here), Another event of the same magnitude was being conducted at the main campus in Gaborone at which two students are to receive their awards," an ecstatic Ndlovu said. "These students were selected from millions of others worldwide. The future is bright for students at ABM; more and more names will be inscribed, that I can assure you."
ABM wanted to show the Tertiary Education Council (TEC), BOTA (the Botswana Training Authority), parents, Government and other stakeholders that quality is the hallmark of ABM.
"The quality systems we have put in place are flawless." Ndlovu continued. "As a result, they have culminated in this award ceremony.
"This gathering has been prompted by the achievement of our students who have been singled out by an international examining body based in the UK ABE, hence our achievement is not authorised by us but by this reputable body. It's a matter of somebody outside the institution passing a verdict professing our quality."
Ndlovu said ABM was providing an enabling environment, which in turn had nurtured products of excellence who have shone like a beacon in the international education fora.
"As I speak, their names have been inducted in the ABE-UK hall of fame. And we at ABM will continue to be leaders in business education."
