The Minister of Education, Dr. Joseph Z. Korto on Thursday announced the suspension of nine principals in Bomi County, who were caught selling food items that were distributed by the World food Program (WFP) to schools in that county.
The Minister also indicated that one District Education Officer (DEO) from Grand Bassa County has also been suspended for the same act that he committed in his county.
Although Dr. Korto did not give the exact names and institutions the principals and DEO represent but he warned schools authorities throughout the country to avoid corrupt practices. He at the same time assured that the names of those involved would be released soon.
Addressing Schools' Principals and Administrators at the GW Gibson High School on the Capital Bye-Pass, Dr. Korto explained that he has received communications from other parts of the country stating that one of the DEO was bold enough to warn Schools principals in the district he represents to put a halt to sharing the food until he could take his share.
According to Dr. Korto, the DEO was quoted as saying "if they receive the food, they should leave some of the consignment for my up keep, and if any principal disobeys my order I will deal with that person".
Minister Korto observed that too many things are happening in the educational sector in Liberia. He cited another incident in which some relatives of DEO in some of the counties were caught taking schools supplies, including realms of sheets, and several others, to nearby countries to sell.
"This is the educational system we have in Liberia. It is corrupted. It is about time to set precedents for other to follow. It is better to deal with ills in society and have a Liberia that they can be proud of or forget about having a Liberia", Dr. Korto stated.
