Angola: Angolan Foreign Affairs Minister At UN/AU Meeting

New York — The minister of Foreign Affairs of Angola, João Bernardo de Miranda is attending since Wednesday, in New York, the top level meeting on the cooperation between the United Nations Security Council and the Council of Peace and Security of the African Union (AU).

The head of the Angolan diplomacy, who arrived in New York on Tuesday, is attending the meeting in representation of the Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos.

Scheduled to end this Thursday, the meeting was summoned through an initiative of South Africa, in the capacity of president of UN's Security Council for April.

A meeting of concert between ambassadors of members States of the Council of Peace and Security of the African Union was held Tuesday at the premises of the AU Observation Mission, and was followed by another between these diplomats and African representatives at the Security Council (South Africa, Burkina Faso and Libya).

At this meeting, Angola was represented by its ambassador to the African Union, Manuel Augusto, who is in New York since Monday to join an Angolan delegation to the top level meeting.

In 2007, UN's Security Council and AU's Council of Peace and Security signed an agreement, in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), which establishes the annual holding of meetings between both organisations with view to develop a strong, structured and effective relation between the parties and a straight collaboration between the United Nations Secretariat and the African Union Commission.

The Angolan delegation also includes the permanent representative to the UN, ambassador Ismael Gaspar Martins, the director of International Organisation of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, ambassador Virgílio Faria, the adviser of the Foreign Affairs minister, ambassador Nelson Cosme, and the director of the minister's office, Júlio Maiato.

Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Ethiopia, Egypt, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Gabon, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Uganda are members of the Council of Peace and Security of the African Union.
