As part of its efforts to reduce and control the rising prices of commodities on the market, the Government of Liberia says it is currently reviewing the entire tax system provided in the 2000 Revenue Code.
The Liberian leader, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who made the disclosure, said government intends to make those revisions that would reduce certain taxes while harmonizing others in consistent with the ECOWAS protocols.
Speaking on Monday, when she addressed the nation, she said as part of the government's measures to control prices on the market, it is finalizing an Executive Order that would place a moratorium on taxes and duties for agriculture, forestry and road building equipment.
She stated further that the government is looking at several charges being levied by the Freeport of Monrovia, as it continues with efforts to look at other general price control measures, all of which are intended to reduce and control prices on the market.
She told the nation that as part of the efforts to control prices, the government has also instructed the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to be even more vigilant in the price control enforcement process.
The President expressed the hope that the Ad-Hoc Price Commission, which was established to look at the reasons behind the rapid increment of commodities on the market, would provide the government with additional recommendations not only as it relates to the nation's staple food but for other essential commodities.
