As the activities of illicit tapers roaming the concession area of Firestone Liberia continue unabated, a gang of them has assaulted and wounded an employee of the company in Division 40.
The attack took place during the morning hours of Tuesday, April 08, 2008, at Tank 6.
According to the victim, Tamba Fayiah, who recently took up assignment in that part of the concession area, he met four unidentified men believed to have come from across the Grand Bassa County's side of the Farmington River in his assigned task who asked him to leave.
He said when he left the scene, he began to work in another part of his task but to his outmost surprise, the same individuals reappeared armed with a single barrel gun and cutlasses. Victim Fayiah disclosed that this time around the men put him at gun point and asked "do you want your life or a wound?" The men forcibly instructed him to lay his index finger on a piece of log to be cut.
He narrated that with such an unfavorable situation, he had no option, but to reluctantly carry on their instruction. Mr. Fayiah said after he complied with them, one of the illicit tapers cut his finger on his left hand; and left him in severe pain.
While he was crying and shouting for help, the men ran back across the Farmington River into Grand Bassa County. Some of his team mates came to his aid and rushed him to the Firestone Medical Center in Harbel where he underwent surgical operations. Victim Fayiah is currently admitted at the Firestone Medical Center.
When contacted, the Superintendent in charge of the area, Mr. Erickson S. Gbollie, confirmed the incident and expressed sorrow that the situation of illicit tapping is continuing in the concession area of Firestone Liberia causing harms and in some instances deaths of employees.
This latest incident brings to two in a month's time, the number of illicit tapers' attacks that have occurred within the concession area of Firestone Liberia.
It can be recalled that a gang of unknown individuals on Monday, March 3, 2008, shot single barrel gun within the vicinities of Tanks 14 and 15 in Division 44 in an attempt to scare employees and stole several quantities of latex and other rubber related products.
