Namibia: Gobabis Hosts Score Youth Festival

17 April 2008

THE Sports Coaches Outreach (SCORE) 'Kicking AIDS Out' youth sports festival is to take place this coming weekend at Gobabis in the Omaheke Region.

The three-day youth sports festivities, taking place from April 18 to 20, will see 10 different towns and villages from within the country locking horns in soccer and volleyball.

Tsumkwe village and the towns of Opuwo, Rundu, Gobabis, Keetmanshoop, Swakopmund, Oshakati and Oshivelo are set to slug it out.

The SCORE sports festival is a Government initiative aimed at promoting and developing different sports codes, as well as to intensify the fight against HIV-AIDS.

Community chef de mission Josephine Jonas told Nampa on Tuesday that this year's event would also incorporate cultural performances in the form of dance, drama and poetry.

She said the winning teams in the two sport codes will walk away with sport equipment such as soccer balls and volleyballs, whistles and soccer nets.

As part of the packages for winners, winning teams will also get an opportunity to travel to Europe.

Last year, the SCORE 'Kicking AIDS Out' youth sports festival was won by the Swakopmund Secondary School, which travelled to Norway.
