The invasion of State land by private individuals is a rather common phenomenon in Cameroon nowadays. The most recent and maybe glaring case, is the one concerning land in the environs of the Presidency in Yaounde. Next week, the squatters will be sent parking and their homes demolished. But, should we really feel sorry for them? Well, yes and no.

Yes, because most of the encroachers have invested their entire savings on the land. Some even had to pay the meagre amounts requested by the con men cum land owners in several instalments! However, if one looks at how much was paid for the land, one would not feel sorry for the unlawful residents. They wanted an "affair land" and they got one! For, how could anyone think good land in the heart of Yaounde would cost FCFA 1,000, 2,000 or even 3,000 per metre square? And to imagine that the property will still be there for all these years? Maybe waiting for them! Lucky guys, not so?

It's either they wanted to play smart on somebody, were wholly naive or simply over fascinated by the idea of being a close neighbour to the Presidency! A lofty dream. Indeed. The "neighbours of the Presidency" failed to be realistic and will just be paying for their gullibility.
