Botswana: Softball Club Promotes HIV/Aids Testing

Motloutse softball club organised a tournament over the weekend to encourage voluntary testing for HIV/AIDS by sports lovers. During the tournament, about 80 people were tested by Tebelopele Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre.
Though organisers wished that all the northern clubs could participate in the tournament only two sides made it - Scramblers and Motloutse. One of the organisers Bakang Ncheng said the turn-out was low due to the short notice. Clubs like Carats had already registered with Orapa mine for a litter picking campaign while players for the army team Wipers were still on standby.
Motloutse and Scramblers played each other twice in the male and female categories. Motloutse women team won both games beating their opponents 8-7 in the first round and 20-11 in the second round. Scramblers' male team won the first round of the game 22-14. Motloutse won the second game 6-4. Prior to the games, softball players observed a moment of silence in memory of the late Jape Bohutsana, a Motloutse player, who perished in a road accident during the Easter holidays.
Ncheng said they are planning to hold similar tournaments annually. Already, they are trying to secure sponsorships for next year's event. OK Foods sponsored this year's tournament with drinking water. "The tournament was a success despite the fact that many teams could not make it and we were surprised by the large numbers that tested," Ncheng said. He said the fact that Botswana Softball Association's Annual General Meeting was postponed from April 5 to April 26 affected the turnout because they had planned to announce the tournament during the meeting.
Meanwhile, Ncheng lamented that Motloutse is struggling to make ends meet. He said that sometimes, the club lacks transport to honour fixtures and players have to use their own money to buy meals during games.
