The Botswana National Front (BNF) has suspended Lobatse Member of Parliament, Nehemiah Modubule from its membership.

Information reaching Mmegi indicates that Modubule learnt about his suspension through his constituency office, which read him a faxed letter confirming that he has been set aside from the party.

However, Modubule could not confirm whether or not he has been suspended. "I have not been informed but anything is possible so I cannot verify with the constituency", he said. He stated that if there was a suspension letter waiting for him at his constituency office, he was yet to know about it.

BNF publicity chief, Moeti Mohwasa also said he was not aware of the suspension. But he explained that " if indeed the Lobatse constituency has taken such a decision they will communicate it to the central committee", he added. He lamented that it was shocking that the media would know about party internal matters before the central committee knew them.

The suspension comes hardly a week after the BNF Chairman, Bashi Sengwaketsi, wrote a strongly-worded letter ordering Modubule to desist from talking to the media about party matters.

The letter, which was leaked to Mmegi, dated April 9, accused the former Chairman of the BNF of breaking the party's code of discipline by publicly arguing that the BNF should go to congress instead of a national conference in accordance with the position held by the party.
