Cameroon: MTN Elite One - Glimmer of Hope for Tonnerre

17 April 2008

The hopes of Tonnerre Yaounde to stay in the first division next year have been rekindled following their 2-nil victory against Lion Ngoma yesterday at the Military stadium in Yaounde.

Tonnerre's victory was long in coming raising fears among supporters that the ill luck was going to continue especially after TKC Boys lost a penalty at the 56th minute. However the salvation goal came barely two minutes later through the very Ngom who lost the penalty to cast off the spell that held Tonnerre clung to the last position on the classification table. A second goal to secure Tonnerre's victory came a few minutes later, this time through Ongolo to seal the fate of Lion Ngoma who were more enterprising in the match.

With the victory, Tonnerre moves up to the 14th position that was occupied by Lion Ngoma with 21 points whereas Lion Ngoma moves further down the league table to replace Tonnerre at the 16th position.

it is worthy to note that the battle is not yet won for Tonnerre nine days to the end of the 2008 elite championship. More so, the team will have to face a tougher resistance in the remaining matches as there is no underdog along their way again.

Meanwhile after the criss-crossing at the helm of the classification table, the status quo was maintained at the end of the 21st day of play as league leaders, Cottonport and their immediate challenger, Canon Yaounde obtained draws. Cotonsport played a zero all tie with Foudre of Akonolinga at the Nko'ovos municipal stadium in Ebolowa. Whereas, Canon played a 1-1 draw with Mount Cameroon of Buea. Cotonsport therefore maintains the first position with 42 points, followed by Canon with 38 points in the second position.
