Ethiopia: U.S. Donates Text Books Worth $1.2mln to Primary School

The Sefere Selam Primary school in Addis Ketema Sub-City on Thursday received a donation of text books valued at more than one and half million USD.

The donation is part of President George W. Bush's African education initiative.

The donated English language text books were developed specifically for Ethiopia and are for in primary school for grade 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Education Minister Dr.Sintayehu Woldemichael received the donation on behalf of the beneficiary school from Dr. Sarah Moten, Africa Coordinator at President Bush's Education Initiative Dr.Sintayehu said the donation was a significant contribution towards the improvement of the quality of education in the country in the frame work of the new education package.

"We hope that our new education package will achieve its goal with the support of the donors," he said.

The textbooks were developed by Alabama A and M Universities in the US, in collaboration with the Ethiopian ministry of Education and with financial support through the United States International Aid Agency.

Along with the Africa education initiative, US support for quality education in Ethiopia includes scholarships that enable girls to complete secondary education, support for teacher training at the primary level, capacity building in planning and management and community empowerment for school governance.

US ambassador to Ethiopia Donald Yamamoto said on the occasion that congratulated the students and advised them to make the best out of the books donated to them and to share what they gained to other students.
