Gambia: 25 Ex-Corps Undergo Entrepreneurship Training

The National Youth Service (NYSS), in collaboration with the Social Development Fund (SDF), on Tuesday, opened a ten-day training for ex-corps members on entrepreneurship, financial management, micro and medium enterprises development, at the President Award Scheme in Bakau.
Mr. Musa Mbye, Executive Director of NYSS, said they have a moral duty to care for young people, especially those who are maginalised, vulnerable and disadvantaged.
Mr. Mbye said this training seeks to unlock the potential for creating more and better jobs in the small enterprise sector, since this is where most young women and men earn their livelihood.
He said "Since its inception 1565 young Gambians took part in NYSS", he said.
Mr. Mbye concluded that the twenty-five young people have undergone skills training programme and that 76% of the group will be engaged in occupations.
Mr. Alasa Gitteh, SDF Fund Manager, said SDF is here to give people mandate to change their philosophy about poverty.
He said a poor person is somebody who does not have water or food; that they are there to provide funds for those who need it to do something to guide them-selves on entrepreneurship development.
The SDF Fund Manager said that, in any enterprise, there must be an entrepreneur who does his own peculiar things.
Mr. Gitteh advised the corps members to take this training seriously.
On his part the SOS for Youth and Sports, Alagie Mass Axi Gai, said that he could recall that in 1998, when the NYSS started graduating corps members in various skills, efforts were also initiated to answer some of the pressing needs and challenges.
He added that the training will include business plan management, financial management and micro and small medium enterprises.

SoS Gai expressed his appreciation of the social development fund for recognizing that young people are partners in national development.
