Monrovia — The Monrovia Transit Authority (MTA) is in dire need of US$5 million to keep it operational and serviceable to the people.
Managing Director Senwon Wiah said the significant portion of the amount would go towards the procurement of equipment and spare parts for the maintenance of the current fleet of Spanish donated buses.
Addressing a press conference Thursday in Monrovia, Senwon also noted that the entity is spending over US$48,000 monthly to fuel the buses; hence he wants duty free privilege on the importation of spare parts, fuel, lubricants and other equipment to keep the system functional.
Mr. Wiah disclosed that four of the nine buses currently plying the city are presently facing frequent break down due to the lack spare parts, and noted that the entity has purchased additional three 28-seater buses valued at US$65,000 to continue operating.
He commended President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for the allotment of US$100,000 subsidy in the supplemental budget for fiscal 2008/09 for the upkeep of the entity, and appealed to the National Legislature to consider his earlier request so as to ease the transportation problem in the county.
As part of its operations, he said, the two Spanish mechanics recently visited the country to sharpen the skills of his technical staff.
