Monrovia

Members of the Liberia Media Law and Policy Reform Working Group along with members of Civil Society organizations yesterday presented three draft media bills to the National Legislature for enactment into law.

The three bills that were presented to both the Liberian Senate and the House of Representatives are Acts to transform LBS to a Public Service Broadcaster, the Freedom of Information Act, and the Independent Broadcasting Regulator Act.

Speaking during the presentation of the three documents to the National Legislature, the Secretary General of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Mr. Peter Quaqua stressed the need for the Liberian media to be truly independent in a bid to better serve the public.

He said a free and independent media is crucial to the democratization of any nation and prayed that both Houses of the Legislature and the Senate would wisely pass these bills into law.

Senator Gbasongar Findley, Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting and his counterpart from the House of Representatives Venicius Hodges received the documents.

Senator Cletus Wotorson, a member of the Senate Committee said without information, decision-making becomes beclouded.

Senator Wotorson reminded Liberians that without the dissemination of adequate information, some uninformed judgments are made. "That's why it is essential to get information," Sen. Wotorson noted.

The House Committee Chairman on Information and Broadcasting, Representative Hodges stated further that when he won the CNN Award sometime back, he wondered whether there was a law that guarantees freedom of information in Liberia.

He said now that such bills have been presented, he would put same on the floor and encourage the participation of all Liberians in the deliberation.

Prior to presenting the three draft laws, members of the Liberian Media paraded through the principal streets of Monrovia from the headquarters of the Press Union of Liberia and proceeded to the Capitol Building, the seat of the National Legislature with banners carrying diversified information about the support for the three Media Draft laws among others.
