SWAKARA pelts achieved a highest price landmark plus a 100 per cent sales record, when 79 653 pelts came under the hammer at the Agra pelt auction in the Danish capital of Copenhagen last week.

The number of pelts auctioned consisted of 69 208 black, 461 grey, 5455 white, 377 brown and 4 152 miscellaneous pelts.

A record price of N$ 1 396,04 was paid for a top lot of 69 D light lyre selected super pelts.

It was bought by the Greek fur producer and retailer Konstantinos Bourtsos.

"This was the highest ever price achieved," Agra's manager of the Swakara Pelt Centre, Wessel Visser, told The Namibian yesterday.

Previous record prices achieved at the Copenhagen Fur auction were N$ 1 250 in April 2006 and N$667,74 in September 2007.

Visser said an average price of N$422,08 was paid for a lot, indicating an increase of 19,37 in the lot average price.

Last year an average of N$353,09 was paid.

According to Visser, of the 35 bidders, agents from England, Japan and Italy bought the bulk.

He added that countries including Germany, USA, South Korea, Hong Kong, Greece, Israel and Denmark also take part in the auction.

However, he noted, contrary to Agra's expectations, demand for the the flat pelt type had decreased, while demand for the developed type pelt had increased.

He attributed this to the high demand for coloured pelts.

Giel Karstens was nominated as the top karakul producer - 574 pelts he produced were sold at an average price of N$ 590,01, Visser said.
