Two young women, whose names were not revealed, were lynched by a mob of local farmers in the Maputo suburb of Mahotas in the early hours of Tuesday, accused of stealing vegetables from their fields, reports Friday's issue of the daily paper 'Noticias'.
The two women, who are believed to be sisters, were beaten to death after being caught red-handed stealing vegetables in one of the fields.
One of them died on the spot, while the other died on the way to hospital, where she was driven after being rescued by the police, who were called to the scene. The police found her in coma from the beating.
Since some time ago, farmers in Mahotas have been complaining of thefts in their fields, usually in the dead of the night, a situation that kept worsening by the day, to the extreme anger of the victims.
The farmers decided to patrol their fields during the night, catching the two red handed on Tuesday night.
During interrogation by the mob of farmers, the two are said to have confessed that they did steal vegetables several times in different fields in that area to sell at their residence in the neighbouring suburb of Laulane.
It is believed that it was this confession that led the farmers to take justice into their own hands.
All was so quick that when the police reached the place, one of the women was already dead, and the other was in coma.

Cases of lynching have been reported in different parts of Maputo and some other places across the country since a few months ago.
