PRESIDENT Mwanawasa is today expected to arrive in the city of Port Louis for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) heads of State summit on poverty and development.

State House special assistant for Press and public relations, John Musukuma and Zambian ambassador to Mozambique, George Chulumanda, who is accredited to Mauritius, said here that the President would arrive in the afternoon.

Dr Mwanawasa, who is the current SADC chairperson, would tomorrow address the conference during the official opening at the Swami Vivekananda, Pailles, where delegates from 14 member-states are gathered.

The SADC consultative conference was held yesterday while the council of ministers meeting would be held today, both preceding the heads of State summit.

SADC holds consultative conferences with its international cooperating partners and other stakeholders every two years to discuss implementation process of its integration agenda and ways in which partnership could be enhanced.

According to documents obtained here, the SADC heads of State and government decided to hold the summit on poverty and development because poverty remained the main challenge facing the region in its effort to develop through regional cooperation and integration.

The heads of State wanted to continue to dialogue on the partnership necessary to accelerate the achievement of millennium development goals.

A programme released yesterday indicated that the heads of State and delegates would be in the meeting from morning up to 18:00 hours tomorrow at the conference centre where the 'Mauritius Declaration on Poverty and Development' was expected to be signed.

The heads of State would then hold a Press conference.

Dr Mwanawasa flies back home on Monday.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Kabinga Pande, led the Government advance delegation, which included Felix Mutati for Commerce, Trade and Industry, Communications and Transport Minister, Dora Siliya, Labour and Social Security Minister, Ronald Mukuma and Sarah Sayifwanda for Agriculture and Cooperatives.
