Eritrea: Red Sea Waters Endowed With Unique And Spectacular Coral Reef, Says Australian Researcher

19 April 2008

Asmara — A renowned Australian researcher of marine science, Dr. John Charli Veron, said that the Eritrean Red Sea waters is endowed with unique and spectacular coral reef.

The researcher indicated that the coral reef in the Eritrean coastline is unique as it has the capacity to tolerate high temperature. Noting that almost all coral reefs in many parts of the world, especially the African coastline and the Indian Ocean has been depleted due to over fishing and other causes, Dr. John Veron expressed admiration to the breathtaking and virgin coral reef in Eritrea.

In a diving research he conducted recently in the Red Sea, the Australian researcher pointed out that he has discovered 5 different types of corals that are new to marine science. He also explained that the best coral reef is exclusively found in the Eritrean part of the Red Sea. Dr. John further stressed the significance of such a resource in promoting the country's tourism sector.

Although several marine researchers indicate that coral reef resources have recently been affected by bleaching and are on the verge of extinction due to global warming, the ones in the Eritrean Red Sea waters are showing signs of recovery, he added.
