Kenya: Pope Appoints Kairo Nyeri Archbishop

20 April 2008

Nairobi — Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Nakuru Catholic Bishop Peter Kairo as the Nyeri Archbishop.

Kairo replaces Archbishop Nicodemus Kirima, who died in November last year.

After Kirima's death, the Pope appointed Nairobi Archbishop Cardinal John Njue as the apostolic administrator of Nyeri awaiting the appointment of a new prelate.

With the appointment of Kairo, Nakuru joins two other dioceses that have been without a bishop. They include Muranga and Kitui.

Kitui, formerly led by Bishop Boniface Lele, has been without a bishop for the last three years after Lele become the Archbishop of Mombasa after Archbishop John Njenga retired. Machakos Bishop Martin Kivuva is the apostolic administrator of the diocese.

Bishop Peter Kihara moved from Muranga to Marsabit in the same capacity.
