The Angolan National Assembly Speaker, Roberto de Almeida, arrived Sunday night in Luanda, after attending the 118th inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Conference, held in Cape Town, South Africa, on April 14-18.

The gathering, which analysed world's current political and socio-economic issues, had as central theme "Push back the frontiers of poverty", a phenomenon that affects millions of people, mainly in Africa. Speaking to the press at the airport, in Luanda, the top parliamentarian said that Angola, a country that just recently came out of a civil war, is carrying out several activities aimed at fighting poverty, as well as to achieve some targets in the ambit of the Millennium Development Goals.

"We are rebuilding the country, we are repairing the infrastructures that were destroyed by the war, as a way to creating employment and improving people's living standards, at the same time that we are also carrying out new undertakings all over the country", he emphasised. Roberto de Almeida added that all this "is intended to decrease the indexes of poverty in Angola, which are still high, so that we can fulfil the Millennium Objective Goals". Meanwhile, the participants to the IPU meeting appealed to the representatives of the more industrialised and developed countries to support poor countries, so that the millennium goals be achieved before the scheduled date, which is the year 2015.

The event also debated issues relating to the fight against poverty, reduction of infant/maternal death, protection of mothers, safeguarding the rights of migrant workers, as well as was approved a declaration on the situation in Zimbabwe.
